Several people have been rescued from a three-storey blaze in Auckland's Ōtāhuhu.

Fire and Emergency were alerted - by an automated alarm - to the fire just after midnight.

The people were rescued from balconies at the rear a multi-residence apartment building just after midnight.

Ten appliances attended the fire which was contained in less than an hour after crews arrived on the scene.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said there were no injuries and an investigator was working to determine the cause of the fire.
