Cliffside rescue attempts underway on Coromandel Peninsula

A cliffside rescue is underway at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula, with emergency services teams from several agencies working together to get people to safety.

People had become stuck on a cliff, and rescuers are working into Saturday night to try to reach them, and get them to firmer ground, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.

Firefighters were using lines rescue equipment.

St John told RNZ a rescue helicopter, an ambulance and a first response vehicle were called to the scene at 8pm Saturday.

They referred any other questions to police.

Hahei Beach is south east of Whitianga, and a popular Coromandel Peninsula summer holiday destination.

Emergency services were also working at a wildfire north of Whitianga, at Kūaotunu, lateon Saturday night.
