Annual donations to political parties published today show larger amounts than in the past, with new rules requiring smaller donations to be reported.

Registered parties need to report any donations of more than $5000 - down from the previous $15,000 - and any anonymous donations.

They must file their returns for the previous calendar year by 30 April, including the name and address of any donor who donated more than $5000.

The Electoral Commission's figures show National had by far the biggest donations.

  • National: $4,889,538.20
  • Labour: $1,627,713.92
  • Greens: $1,588,680.02
  • ACT: $1,463,445.22
  • New Zealand First: $758,773.91 and a $119,000 loan

Five of the parties that contested the last election are no longer registered with the Commission, including Democracy NZ, Democratic Alliance, Freedoms NZ, the Leighton Baker Party, New Nation Party, and NZ Loyal.
