Half centuries, a hat-trick and an opening bowling onslaught proved a lot of action could be packed into a rain reduced one-dayer between the Black Caps and Sri Lanka in Hamilton.

Made to wait more than two hours to start the second match in the series at Seddon Park due to rain and a wet outfield each team had 37 overs to make a impact with the bat.

Sent in to bat, the Black Caps set Sri Lanka 256 to win and level the series, and reminiscent of the first game of the three match series, the Sri Lanka top order was skittled cheaply and the visitors could not recover.

New Zealand won by 113 runs to clinch the series 2-0.

The Black Caps made one change to their 11 with Tom Latham coming in for wicketkeeper-batter Mitch Hay after missing the first game with a side strain.

Sri Lanka took their first wicket in the fifth over when Will Young was bowled by Asitha Fernando for 16.

But New Zealand then took control of innings.

A 112-run second wicket partnership between Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman laid the foundation for a competitive total.

Chapman was caught for 62 off 52 balls - his second career ODI 50 - which brought Daryl Mitchell to the crease.

Ravindra and Mitchell could only put on 25 more runs before Ravindra was out to a good catch by the Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka for 79 off 63 balls.

Latham's return did not last long as he was run out for one.

Mitchell and Glenn Phillips kept the runs flowing before Phillips was caught for 22 trying to find another boundary.

Phillips' dismissal lead to the Sri Lanka bowlers applying the brakes on the New Zealand innings for three overs before captain Mitch Santner and Mitchell hit 16 off the 34th over.

Maheesh Theekshana had Santner out for 20 and Nathan Smith out for a golden duck with the next ball. He had to wait until his next over to complete his hat-trick with Matt Henry the victim of the milestone ball.

Mitchell was out in the penultimate over for 38 trying to scoop pace bowler Eshan Malinga. It was Malinga's first international wicket.

Theekshana was the best of the Sri Lanka bowlers taking four wickets for 44 runs off the eight overs he was allowed to bowl in the reduced overs competition.

In reply, Sri Lanka were 22-4 in the fifth over.

Jacob Duffy had a wicket with the second ball of his opening spell dismissing Pathum Nissanka for one in the second over of Sri Lanka's innings.

Duffy had a second wicket at the end of his next over with Kusal Mendis out for two before Henry had Avishka Fernando caught out with the next ball.

Santner ran out his opposing captain and Sri Lanka were in trouble.

A 57-run partnership between Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage for the fifth wicket gave their side some stability.

But when Smith claimed his first wicket of the game getting Liyanage for 22 Sri Lanka were forced to rebuild again.

Kamindu Mendis scored his second ODI 50 as he combined with Chamindu Wickramasinghe to add 47 runs to the total before a miscommunication between the batters resulted in the second run out of the innings with Chamindu out for 17.

Wanindu Hasaranga was Santner's first wicket of the night and Will O'Rourke had Kamindu Mendis caught by Mitchell for a career high score of 64 off 66 balls.

Malinga was out to a spectacular diving catch from Smith on the boundary as New Zealand took their ninth wicket and Mitchell's athleticism was on display when he caught the final wicket of the game.

Sri Lanka were all out for 142 in the 31st over.

The final game is in Auckland on Saturday.
