Canterbury have won their first NPC title in eight years with a storming second half performance to deny Otago 36-28 in Christchurch.

The red-and-blacks trailled by four points at halftime, but three tries in quick succession set the platform for victory in the South Island showdown.

In a pulsating first half in front of a sellout stadium, both sides traded blows in a physical battle up front, with Otago setting the pace.

They struck inside the opening five minutes through Thomas Umaga-Jensen, after a slick build-up involving Will Tucker, Christian Lio-Willie and Dylan Pledger.

Canterbury hit back soon after, Dallas McLeod powering over in the corner, before Lucas Casey crossed for Otago and Brodie McAlister responded for the home side.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, Canterbury began to take control of territory and possession.

They struck early through Manasa Mataele, who finished brilliantly in the corner, after quick hands from Braydon Ennor and Dallas McLeod. Ennor then crossed himself soon after, before Mataele and Louie Chapman combined to extend the lead with a superb counterattack try.

Otago weren't done yet, as Ben Lopas muscled over to keep them in touch, but Canterbury's relentless pressure told again, when Gus Brown powered over to all but seal the result heading into the final stages.

Otago refused to fold, showing their attacking flair, as Umaga-Jensen sliced through late to set up Jona Nareki for a classy consolation in the corner, but it was too little too late.

Canterbury's control through their kicking game and their ability to execute with precision in key moments made the difference. Their forwards were immense at the breakdown and in contact, while their backs were sharp and clinical with every opportunity.

Fijian winger Mataele was outstanding for Canterbury with his second half try igniting the home side's attack. Big celebrations will follow in Christchurch tonight.
