Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Friday

The Situation

Cyclone Tam weakens and fills to the southwest of Taranaki today, while several associated fronts and troughs affecting much of New Zealand move slowly eastward and gradually weaken. A southwest flow develops over the country on Tuesday, and a cold front moves onto the South Island from the southwest later.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

For the whole North Island

Scattered showers, some heavy, with isolated thunderstorms possible about the central high country this afternoon and evening. Showers clearing from Wellington and Wairarapa tomorrow morning, then in the west from Waitomo and Taumarunui to Manawatu tomorrow afternoon.

Nelson, Buller, Marlborough and Canterbury north of Banks Peninsula

Rain, briefly heavy in Marlborough, easing to scattered showers this afternoon. Showers clearing from Canterbury early Tomorrow morning, and easing elsewhere.

Remainder of Canterbury

Cloudy with patchy drizzle clearing overnight tonight, becoming fine tomorrow.

Grey, Westland and Fiordland

Mostly fine. Cloud increasing tomorrow afternoon, with isolated showers possible in Grey, and scattered evening rain for Fiordland.

Otago and Southland

Mostly cloudy, with patchy drizzle about the coast clearing this afternoon. Mainly fine tomorrow, scattered rain developing late afternoon to evening.

Chatham Islands

Occasional rain.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Wednesday

North Island: Scattered showers, clearing in the west from Waikato to the Kapiti Coast in the afternoon or evening. South Island: Mainly fine in the west, isolated showers in Buller and Grey. Elsewhere, showers spreading north in the morning, then clearing from the south during the afternoon and evening.

Thursday

North Island: Scattered showers in the north and east, clearing for most later. Fine spells elsewhere. Southland: Mainly fine, apart from scattered showers in the west.

Friday

North Island: Scattered showers in the north, also in northern Gisborne, mainly fine elsewhere. South Island: Mainly fine in the east also in Buller, showers elsewhere.

And at the Chathams

Rain turning to showers late Wednesday, then easing and becoming fewer early Thursday. Gale southwesterlies developing early Wednesday, then easing Thursday.
