Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Sunday

The Situation

A low pressure system and its associated front approach the South Island from the northwest tonight, then move east tomorrow, leaving a broad trough over the country.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

In the west from Northland to Wellington, also central high county, Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty

Scattered showers today, some heavy and possibly thundery. Morning rain or drizzle in Wellington and the Horowhenua Kapiti Coast tomorrow, with isolated showers elsewhere.

Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa

Fine apart from a few showers today, with thunderstorms possible south of Gisborne. Mainly fine tomorrow, with the odd afternoon shower.

Nelson, Buller and Marlborough

Periods of rain with heavy falls, especially about the ranges, with possible thunderstorms. Rain easing to showers in the west tomorrow afternoon, while becoming mainly fine elsewhere.

Grey and Westland

Scattered rain, with possibly thunderstorms this afternoon, easing to a few showers in the morning then clearing in Westland later.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Mostly cloudy, with scattered rain or showers. Isolated thunderstorms inland tomorrow afternoon and evening

Chatham Islands

Periods of rain, with some heavy falls, clearing later tomorrow.

Friday

North Island: Showers, mainly afternoon and evening, possibly heavy. South Island: Showers, mainly inland in the afternoon and evening, maybe heavy.

Saturday

North Island: Showers, in the north, but rain for a time, with heavy falls possible. A few showers in the south. South Island: Isolated showers in the west and south. Showers elsewhere.

Sunday

North Island: A few showers in the east clearing. Otherwise, mainly fine, with isolated afternoon or evening showers. South Island: A few showers in the west. Otherwise, mainly fine, with isolated afternoon or evening showers inland.

And at the Chathams

Periods of rain, possibly heavy, clearing late Thursday then cloudy periods and the odd shower. Northerlies changing westerly on Friday and strengthening on Saturday. Showers with southerlies on Sunday.
