Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
A ridge of high pressure lies west of New Zealand, while a front over the South Island weakens today. The ridge moves northeast during Wednesday, allowing a strengthening northwesterly flow to become established over southern areas, bringing heavy rain to the western South Island.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to Taranaki, including Coromandel Peninsula
Partly cloudy. Chance of a shower near the west coast.
Bay of Plenty and the central high country, also Gisborne to Wairarapa
Mainly fine. Isolated showers inland this afternoon and evening.
Whanganui to Wellington
Fine. Becoming cloudy this evening with patchy drizzle developing tonight. Scattered showers north of Wellington tomorrow afternoon.
Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury
Cloudy periods, but long fine spells in Nelson and Marlborough. Becoming fine and warm tomorrow morning.
Buller and Westland
Cloudy. Occasional rain developing in Westland this evening spreading to Buller tomorrow morning.
Otago and Southland
Cloudy periods. Rain spreading north tomorrow morning and afternoon.
Fiordland
Scattered light rain, becoming persistent and heavy tomorrow morning.
Chatham Islands
A possible shower today, but mainly fine tomorrow.

Thursday
North Island: Partly cloudy with isolated showers, mainly in the south. Northwesterlies in the south rising to gale. South Island: Heavy rain spreading north, easing in the south. Northwesterlies rising to gale in exposed places.
Friday
North Island: Rain developing in the southwest, isolated showers from afternoon in the north, and fine in the east. Strong to gale northwesterlies in the south. South Island: Rain in the north, heavy in the west. Scattered showers elsewhere.
Saturday
North Island: Rain, with heavy falls. South Island: Isolated showers in the south. Rain elsewhere, with some heavy falls in the north and east. Snow possible to 500 metres in Canterbury and Marlborough.

Thursday: Fine. Strong northwesterlies. Friday: Partly cloudy. Strong northwesterlies. Saturday: Rain easing to a few showers by afternoon. Strong northwesterlies.
