The Situation

A series of fronts embedded in a large area of low pressure move slowly across the country during Boxing day and Saturday.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland to Waitomo, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and the central high country

Rain developing this afternoon with possible thunderstorms and downpours, easing this evening, clearing overnight. A few showers tomorrow.

Gisborne, Hawke's Bay

Mainly fine. Scattered rain this evening and overnight. A few showers from tomorrow afternoon.

Taranaki to Wellington, also Wairarapa

Rain, easing to isolated showers this evening. Thunderstorms possible in Whanganui, Manawatu and the Tararua District tomorrow afternoon and evening,

Nelson and Marlborough

Partly cloudy with showers, clearing this evening, returning tomorrow morning. Thunderstorms possible about the Kaikoura Coast tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Buller to Fiordland

Showers, some heavy, with possible thunderstorms, clearing tomorrow evening.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Showers, some heavy with possible thunderstorms and hail during the afternoons and evenings.

Chatham Islands

Mostly cloudy. Showers developing this evening, clearing tomorrow morning.

Sunday

North Island: A few showers in the north, turning to rain from Northland to Auckland later. Isolated afternoon and evening showers elsewhere. South Island: A few showers in the east, extending elsewhere in the afternoon, clearing in the evening.

Monday

North Island: Periods of rain with heavy falls in the east, easing in the north later. South Island: Rain developing in the north and east. Partly cloudy with isolated showers elsewhere.

Tuesday

North Island: Mostly cloudy. Rain in the east, easing. Showers elsewhere. South Island: Rain in the east, with heavy falls. Mainly fine in the west, isolated showers elsewhere.

And at the Chathams

Mainly fine on Sunday. Cloud increasing Monday, rain developing later Tuesday. Southwesterlies, turning southeast on Tuesday.
