Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday

The Situation

A front lies over the upper South Island, preceded by strong north to northwesterlies, then moves north over the North Island today followed by cooler southwesterlies.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland to Waitomo, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, the central high country and Gisborne

Isolated showers, turning to rain for a time this afternoon or evening, possibly heavy. Showers easing tomorrow afternoon.

Taranaki to Wellington

Rain, briefly heavy, easing to a few showers by evening, possibly heavy and thundery tomorrow.

Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa

Rain spreading north, clearing later. Showers spreading north tomorrow morning, possibly heavy and thundery.

Nelson to Grey, also Marlborough

Showers, some heavy and possibly thundery from this afternoon.

Canterbury and Otago

Showers, some heavy with thunderstorms and hail possible from afternoon, especially about south Canterbury and coastal Otago, easing to tomorrow afternoon.

Westland, Fiordland and Southland

Showers, some heavy with possible thunderstorms and hail, clearing this evening. One or two showers possible tomorrow.

Chatham Islands

Showers developing tomorrow morning, turning to rain in the afternoon.

And the outlook for the following three days...

Thursday

North Island: Partly cloudy, with scattered showers developing early, but mainly dry in Auckland, Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula. South Island: In the west, a few showers in Fiordland, spreading further north later. Elsewhere, isolated showers.

Friday

North Island: Scattered showers, mainly in the west. South Island: Rain developing in the south early, then spreading elsewhere, easing to isolated showers in the south later.

Saturday

North Island: Showers, some heavy in the west, easing. South Island: A few showers, mainly in the south.

And at the Chathams

Rain, easing to a few showers for a time on Friday. Northerlies dying out on Thursday. Westerlies developing Friday morning, then turning northerly in the afternoon. Changing westerly early Saturday morning.
