Australia election: Anthony Albanese triumphs in results as Labor on track to form government

7:23 am today

See how the election unfolded on Saturday:

Anthony Albanese looks set to return for a second term as prime minister.

While Labor has not yet clinched a majority of seats, it is close to doing so.

It will make Anthony Albanese the first prime minister elected twice since John Howard.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Peter Dutton conceded the election and loss in his own seat.

"We didn't do well enough in this campaign, that much is obvious tonight."

He says he called both Anthony Albanese and Labor's Dickson candidate Ali France to concede and congratulate them.

"It is an historic occasion for the Labor Party and we recognise that. I congratulated the prime minister and wished him, Jodie and Nathan all the very best and I said to the prime minister that his mother would be incredibly proud of his achievement tonight and he should be proud of what he has achieved."
