Daniel Suidani, the former premier of Malaita Province in the Solomon Islands, has died.
Suidani was one of the most vocal critics of the country's diplomatic switch from Taiwan to China in September 2019.
His former advisor Celsus Talifilu announced his death on Tuesday morning.
Talifilu said Suidani passed away at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara.
"It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Honourable Daniel Suidani, Member of Malaita Provincial Assebly Ward 5, West Baegu/Fataleka, who passed away this morning at NRH.
"Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official commemorations will be announced in due course."
Suidani served as the Premier of Malaita from June 2019 until his removal via a vote of no confidence in Febraury 2023.
His time in office was "marked by significant political tension that placed him at the forefront of national debates, particularly regarding the Solomon Islands' foreign policy", the Sunday Isles newpaper said.
"Known for his vocal stance and leadership, his death marks the end of an era for the [Malaita] province and the nation."
