More landslides have occurred in the disaster-stricken township of Afaahiti, in French Polynesia, where eight people died following a major landslide.

The affected zone remains under high surveillance and following the recent minor landslides on Monday local time in which four more families were evacuated for safety reasons.

The whole region is now under a high level "amber vigilance" warning for heavy rains.

On Monday, local time, another landslide led to the evacuation of four more families for safety reasons.

The families evacuated last week from the major landslide have not returned to their homes.

Some of them told public broadcaster Polynésie La Première that even if they were authorised to return to their homes, they wouldn't because they were too scared.

Earlier in the week, the national forecasting agency Météo France warned of a high risk of "intense and continuous" heavy rain for the whole of the Society Islands, where the main island of Tahiti is located, with associated winds gusting 100kph.

This was due to a tropical low pressure system with a potential to aggravate into a tropical cyclone, the agency warned.

Preparation warnings were also issued along with recommendations to the general public to avoid moving outside of their home unless absolutely necessary.
