9:20 Fire-resistant design saves Palisades house

The fires ripping through LA have caused unrepairable damage, with more than twelve thousand buildings destroyed.

Eighty-four thousand people have evacuated and don't know whether they'll have a home to return to.

But some buildings have managed to stay standing, including a six month-old house designed by architect Greg Chasen.

The neighbouring houses in the Palisades were destroyed, and Greg thinks it was a combination of luck and fire-resistant design strategies that kept his client's home safe.

Greg joins Anna to talk through the design.

10:08 Road Trip: Sam Stubbs

On our road trip today we find out about the man who's made money his business.

He openly admitted that greed was once a big motivator, but now he's the industry disrupter with a social conscience.

Nine years ago he launched Simplicity, a low cost KiwiSaver provider, which now manages billions of dollars worth of funds and investment portfolios.

In 2023 he went a step further, launching the Simplicity Homes and Income Fund, aiming to build and finance 25,000 new homes nationally worth $12 billion in the next 10 to 15 years.

He joins Anna Thomas for a road trip, setting a course for the Coromandel, picking the tunes, and sharing his story.

Sam's playlist:

  • Dreadlock Holiday - 10cc
  • Jammin - Bob Marley
  • Maybe Tomorrow - Goldenhorse

11:25 Why starting your day with a rave works

A group called Morning People runs raves at the crack of dawn as a fun way to start a day, rather than tacking on to the end of a long night out.

Kombucha and bananas are on offer for the early risers who often come to hit the dance floor before work.

Jamie Newman joins Anna to tell us more.
